- [Req for help crossposted to three newsgroups total]
-
- I have been working with someone that is having a problem with
- Windows 3.1 trying to start ANY app using COM2 (his internal modem).
- The Win error message is the one about "com port is invalid or in
- use". No other Win (or DOS) app is running. The reason for the
- error is NOT obvious to me. I do not have physical access to the
- machine. PD has been by e-mail.
-
- Running MSD in DOS shows expected machine config:
- Older (circa '92) 386 PC/AT clone, MSDOS 6.2
- com1 at 03F8, IRQ 4
- com2 at 02F8, IRQ 3
- The machine has a pretty basic config, and no i/o address or IRQ
- conflicts are apparent. There is a Logitech PS/2 mouse, game
- adapter, VGA graphics card, one (1) hard drive, one printer (LPT1
- at 0378, irq 7).
-
- In the MSD report, 'COM Ports' section, under COM2: column, the
- following couple of odd things (odd to me) appear ...
- Port Address 02F8H
- Baud Rate 1
- Parity None
- Data Bits 5
- Stop Bits 1
- etc. (everything else as expected)
-
- What is the deal with baud rate=1 and data bits=5 ?? Does anyone
- know where MSD pulls these values from? BIOS data area? A query to
- the serial port? There is some 'evidence' these values change
- occasionally (seen by running MSD now and then) for 'no reason'
- (where quoted words denote possible, 'tho unintended, BS).
-
- Any insight wrt the Win com2 problem or the reported MSD com2 values
- will be appreciated. Please post the newsgroup and/or reply by mail,
- whatever is most convenient. TIA.
